Energy consumption must be approached in an extremely rational manner, partly because a portion of the energy products which we use, are derived from non-renewable sources, and partly because of their combustion. During the combustion of the energy products, such as electricity, fuel and gas, the harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide, and waste heat, are being released. These waste gases are accumulating in the atmosphere, and creating a so-called. greenhouse effect. For this reason, RAVLIC is turning to the renewable energy sources, and the utilization of the waste heat.

In order to reduce the energy consumption, it is necessary to realize cost savings in all the stages of business. We are starting from the design of energy efficient technological facilities. While planning a new facility, we have planned an installation of solar cells, for power generation, and the system for recovering hot water. In our large refrigeration plants, during the meat cooling process, a waste heat is created. That waste heat can be reused for hot water production, that is needed in the slaughterhouse facility. In that way, we could achieve savings in the consumption of gas that we use for water heating.

All of our refrigeration systems contain freon, a gas that provides a constant cooling effect with the technical refrigeration. It is essential for our production, but if there is a leak of freon from the refrigeration systems into the atmosphere, it can cause the damage to the ozone layer. Several years ago RAVLIC replaced the type of freon in the cooling systems with an ecological variant, and we are constantly monitoring its level. Recently, on the market, there was an increase in demand for the refrigeration systems that use ammonia instead of freon. Ammonia is a gas that has no effect on the ozone layer, and, at RAVLIC, we are considering the possibility of switching to ammonia.

At the location of the Meat industry RAVLIC, one source of broadcast of the air pollutants has been recognised. It is a boiler from the boiler room, which is being used for hot water production, and heating of working premises, and it is fueled by the natural gas. Particle emissions are regularly being tested, and during all tests, it was determined that the test results are below the limit prescribed by the Regulation on limit values for emissions to air.
